Below is a Recent Interview i did for digital Ireland.
What exactly are the green benefits of virtualisation?
Virtualisation dramtically reduces the power consumption of your traditional physical server deployment, as because it allows you to fully utilize all aspects of the server it means a reduction in the volume of servers you need to deploy in order to run your application or website. Virtual servers whilst giving you the exact same functionality consumes less than 5% the power of a physical server
1Kw /Per hour meaning you can run 20 virtual servers off the same power as 1 physical server, reducing your power consumation massively and of course saving on costs.
Are they are cut and dry as ‘virtual servers use less power?
Put simply “yes” , in days gone by you would need to deploy a server for your mail , one of your internal systems , one for your website. Now by utlizing the power of virtualisation you can run all these services of a single machine, meaning less engery used and less expense to companies due to the reduced hardware needed.
Is the green agenda across the IT industry as ‘sexy’ as it was pre-recession?
While the green agenda might have started off as lip service to begin with, it is actually a big driver now in terms of how things are being done, because now greener equals cheaper, and that is something all businesses expecially ones in the recession are looking to drive down. Better use of existing hardware by using virtualisation technologies , allows companies to use less power and less hardware, meaning companies can now deploy on a single machine something which before use to take ten servers, so the cost savings are very visible.
Is green tech synonymous with lean tech?
Very much so, green tech like lean tech is about doing more with less, so they go very much hand in hand. Companies are looking to reduce costs by getting more functionality and use out of existing technologies whilst also looking to reduce those costs at the same time.
If so what’s stopping every business from switching to virtualisation?
Well virtualisation is the fastest growing area in technology sector , so i believe more and more companies are seeing the benefit and switching, not every company however are quick to change and most want to wait awhile to see is virtualisation the right solution for them before the move their systems from their legacy set-ups.
What drives people to go green and more importantly sustain a green outlook as regards the technology they use?
I suppose in todays day and age we all have a better understanding of the environmental impact we have, so i think people are now more than ever very conscious of the technology they use and how that technology is powered. The fact that green technology allow means people get the same technology for less can only help drive people towards using green technology going forward.
With virtualisation customers have their servers in the cloud but what about Dediserve’s own servers and operations – how do you make sure they are as green as possible as regards operating costs etc?
Well all dediserves servers and systems are run off our cloud as well so we practice what we preach.By selling Virtual servers connecting to San storage devices ,Our servers have no local disks and are highly efficient as they can run at 80% utilisation so with all storage being pooled, our infrastructure is over 75% more efficient than a traditional datacentre,Meaning one dediserve server rack is now the equivalent to 25 traditional racks of servers. We benefit and the customers benefit and of course the environment benefits. One dediserve server rack is now the eqivalent to 25 traditional racks of servers.
Dediserve uses open source technology – is this any ‘greener’ than proprietary technology?
Yes due to their very nature opensource can be seen as green technology , due to the fact they are built collaboratively by people all over the world who dedicate their free time to the improvement of the technology, there is no need for air travel, big offices, face to face meetings , or the associated environmental issues that go with running a large company that build simliar proprietary software.
